5 months after my hiking partner Terry's bicycle accident, we plan to get on the PCT. We are looking at a section between Cottonwood Pass and Onion Valley and if successful we will continue from Onion Valley to Taboose Creek. Our Journey begins on July 21, 2024!

Our Journey lasted two days. We hiked from the Cottonwood Parking lot to the Upper Lake below New Army Pass. The next day, we decided not to continue and headed back to the parking lot. We had done a car shuffle and had to pick up a car. On our drive to pick up the car, we picked up two hikers needing a ride to Highway 395.

Vaccines for Africa - Today received Yellow Fever and Typhoid Shots.

What Vaccines Do I Need for North and West Africa? The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for travelers to North and West Africa: Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, cholera, yellow fever, rabies, anthrax, and meningitis.

Today my wife and I received our vaccination shots for the upcoming Africa Safari trip. We received polio, and typhoid shots, and picked a waiver for the Yellow Fever vaccination. We also received Azithromycin tablets, Atovaquone-Proguanil pills, and Oseltamivir Phosphate.

For the medications, injections, waiver, and consult the total cost was $662.22. Breakdown:

$1.11 Copay ($25.69) for Azithromycin

Planning Safari to Africa August 2024

With my wife retiring on April 2, 2024, my 65th birthday on July 5, 2024, and our 40th wedding anniversary on August 11, 2024 we have decided to continue our trip in Africa that we began in 2018. On that trip we began in Swakopmund, Namibia and traveled to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. That Safari trip took 15 days and were gone a total of 3 weeks. We took the trip through Africa Travel Company.

The trip we are planning this week will begin in Nairobi, Kenya and travel south where we end in Livingstone, Zambia. The Safari trip length is 22 days. This time we will be using African Overland Tours.

Beth officially has retired from teaching at West Coast University and is now joining me on our retirement journey! LOL. Our first adventure is a four-day trip to San Clement State Beach Campground!

Southern Terminus of the PCT

On our projected start date of 3/4/2024, I headed alone, towards the Southern Terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail to see whom we may have been hiking with and to pick up the PCT moniker. Our start of the PCT was interrupted when my hiking partner was in a bicycle accident which resulted in 9 broken ribs and two punctured lungs. We hope to do some portion of the PCT this year and if possible delay the start until next hiking season.

PCT Hike Delayed!

My PCT, Pacific Crest Trail hike has been placed on hold. My hiking partner was on a training bike ride on Baseline Drive and was involved in a three-bicycle accident that placed him in the hospital for a week. He broke at least four of his ribs and punctured both of his lungs. The accident took place just two weeks before we were scheduled to begin our journey on March 3, 2024. We have not ruled out a later start and or doing a portion of the hike, and or postponing the hike until next hiking season in 2025.

On our start date +1, March 4, I drove down to the town of Campo, CA. which is about 1 1/2 hours east of Encinitas on the Mexican border, this is the Southern Terminus of the PCT. I went to meet who might have been hiking with me and to pick up the placards that are given to permitted hikers.
